Protective Medical Decisions Declaration

The PMDD is intended to help you clarify your wishes as a person who upholds certain values: the sanctity of human life and rests in the sovereignty of God over matters of life and death. You may order copies of the PMDD through our catalog at minimal charge, or download them here free of charge.

It does not replace a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care. In fact, it should be used in conjunction with a document that allows you to name a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care who shares your beliefs and values. Such forms for all fifty states are available for download free of charge from National Right to Life.

How do these documents differ from a Living Will? A "living will" is a document that directs an attending physician to withhold or withdraw life-sustaining treatment in the event the signer is incapacitated and suffering from "an incurable injury, disease, or illness certified to be a terminal condition." Such decisions are subject to the interpretation of whatever attending physician is on duty, and may be made in opposition to the signer's beliefs and values.
