It's Alive, but is it a Person?

Once a human egg is fertilized by sperm, a new human being exists. All information concerning the child's sex, hair color, eye color, and much more is already present from the beginning.

Some people acknowledge that the newly formed embryo is alive, but doubt "it" is a person. If the embryo is not a human being, what is it? A giraffe? A grapefruit?

Some people get stuck on terms like zygote or embryo or fetus, but those are just stages of life, like infant or toddler or teenager. What are the signs of personhood?

What does God say?

God, the Creator of all life, should have something to say about His creation, and He does! In Psalm 139, verses 13 through 16, David responds with wonder at how well God knows him:

You created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully
and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
. . . your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

  1. Human beings are different from all other creation because we are made in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27). We have an eternal spirit that begins at conception, when God's knowledge and care for us is evident.

  2. Also, God's Son, Jesus, did not despise being "made in human likeness" (Philippians 2:7), starting out his time on earth as an embryo in the womb of Mary.

  3. Finally, Jesus died on the cross to end our separation from God that was caused by sin. Romans 5, verse 8 says: "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Because God made us, knows all about us, and loves us, He alone has the right to determine the boundaries of our lives, including the end. Learn what else the Bible says about unborn human life.

From the moment of conception, every human being has worth - is a person - because we bear His image. The unborn human's shape and size may appear unusual to our eyes, but that only means that we need to get better acquainted with human life at the early stages. That is simply what a new human life looks like at one day, or one week. We all start out as a few cells. Ultimately, size and shape don't matter!

What does an abortion do?

Abortion ends a human life. No one can morally choose to end the life of another, even a person in the womb. Just because abortion is legal, doesn't make it right.7 weeks from conception, used by permission of Life Issues Institute

Some people say that abortion is nothing more than the termination of a pregnancy; that what is aborted is nothing more than a "blob of tissue" or a "mass of cells." An early abortion produces what appears to be a "blob of tissue," but what would you expect the shredded remains of a tiny unborn baby to look like?

12 weeks from conception, used by permission of Life Issues Institute.Most abortions are performed after the eighth week of pregnancy which is beyond the point when the child exhibits many signs of life, but before the time when cartilage has given way to real bone (by the end of the sixth month). Later abortions produce fully recognizable body parts or even whole, fully formed babies. Even pills that cause very early abortions end a human life.

If you are experiencing a problem pregnancy, seek help from someone who will affirm the personhood of your unborn child.

 There are alternatives to abortion.
