Lying on the table, she stared intently at the screen while the technician nudged the instrument around on her abdomen. She saw a beating heart, the top of the brain, both kidneys, fingers, and toes. Every glimpse reassured this mother of two -- soon to be three -- boys.
But to the sonographer and obstetrician something about the 15-week-old fetus didn't look right. There was a large sac at the back of his head, and his kidneys appeared to be too large. The doctor couldn't be sure what was wrong, but began to run through a list of dire scenarios. The worst was that this baby wouldn't survive long after birth.
