After the fatal attacks on abortion providers, Baptists for Life responded with the following statements to the media:
"We emphatically reject and abhor the actions of those responsible for the deaths and wounding of abortionists and their cohorts. As a Christian organization affirming life, we offer our prayers on behalf of the family members of the victims that God would comfort them in their grief and anguish over the loss of their loved ones.
"The task of pro-life organizations and individuals devoted to ministering in Christ's name to women with unplanned pregnancies has been made that much more difficult by these killings. But we must continue to reach out with compassion and mercy despite the increased difficulties and rejections that are sure to follow as a result of these reprehensible acts of violence.
"Those responsible do not represent the thousands of pro-life women and men who are dedicating their lives and personal resources to the preservation of life through local church-based ministries and community-led outreaches. Adding more victims to the millions of unborn children killed by abortion will not bring to a close what has become one of America's most tragic periods in modern history."
Biblical reasons to oppose attacks on abortionists:
-
The State is God's instrument of justice (Romans 13:4).
-
When the State fails to administer justice, God is the avenger of innocent blood (Psalm 94:1, 21-23).
-
It is not God's will that we suffer as murderers (I Peter 4:15).
-
Good works reflect the glory of God (Matthew 5:16), not evil deeds.
-
We are to be "a peculiar people" (I Peter 2:9), not conformed to the ways of the world (Romans 12:2).
-
Our weapons are not the ones used by ungodly people (II Corinthians 10:4).
-
Our fight is not with ungodly people (Ephesians 6:12).
-
In combating sin, we must be careful not to fall into sin ourselves (Galatians 6:1).
-
God is not pleased when abortionists die in sin (II Peter 3:9), but wants them to repent and live (Ezekiel 18:23), as some already have.
